Up in Sunny Broome, WA

Wednesday August 31st, 2011

‘Allo!

It’s been a while between posts. I’ve moved to sunny Broome to work as a journo and a photographer for the regional paper: The Broome Advertiser.
I’ve been here a total of nine weeks so far and loving every moment of it!

Thus far I’ve taken photos of Autore Pearls, met Romance Was Born, photographed the gorgeous Kimberley girls, covered the Broome Cup, met the Governor General and touched a 4.5 metre croc!

The list doesn’t end there….

Broome is really a happening place and there is a lot of unrest at the moment due to the LNG gas plant proposed by Woodside and Rio Tinto to mine off the coast. Posing plenty of problems for the community: socially, economically and environmentally. If you have an interest in the future of Western Australia then I recommend reading up on it. Currently, as it stands, the future of the state depends on its mining and industry, with 400,000 people needed to sustain the industry in the next 20 years. What could this mean for you?

Tomorrow, Federal Minister for Environment Tony Burke will be flying to the top of the Cape, to One Arm Point, to announce the decision: will the Kimberley become nationally heritage listed as a place to preserve history, culture and land?

Looking forward to it!

Over and out for now,
from the remote

Nikki xx

Happy New Year 2011!

Sarah Flynn in my (albeit corny) horror film 'Fourth One's A Charm' a 2004 ECU 4x4 Film Fest Finalist

Well folks, this year is set to be a big one

Starting in Feb I will be commencing my Masters in Professional Communications in Screen Studies at the Western Australian Screen Academy here in Mount Lawley. It’s set to be full on with 6 set productions plus 2 more I need to personally contribute to a showreel done outside of the already jam packed production schedule. Woot!

I’m really looking forward to going back to the roots of my education which started out in film, back when I was a pimply 14 year old. There were a few films that changed the way I saw things at that age, Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo and Juliet being one of them (haha) and Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. Since those days I was set to become a director, so I studied film and later on photography (for cinematographical purposes) which then became my passion and now? Life is coming full circle again.

So it seems the last 3 years of hard work have paid off in all the crazy film and photography work I’ve done. Fun fact: Did you know I was a Food Judge on Foxtel’s TV show ‘The Best In Australia”? ! No culinary qualification’s were necessary on that one though, all I had to do was eat and drink to my heart’s content and pipe that the food was bloody awesome!
Though I’m sure all the good work doesn’t end there- this year I’m also hoping to create even more wonderful photographic tableaus featuring you pretty Perthites and I’m still contributing to my secret lovers at Cut and Paste DVD and still teaching film at SAE. And as for my zine MD Limited Editions? Secret squirly things happening in the pipeline….

So I’m scouting around already for talent to be involved on set: designers, illustrators for production design and storyboard artwork, models/actresses, stylists, musicians to feature and compose for film soundtracks. Essentially my overall aim is to collaborate on one if not a couple of films and have a really great representation of talented Perth punks woven into the fabric of the films. Imagine that!

Hit me up if you’re interested (or I’ll hunt you down) at nicolenorelli@gmail.com

Hearts Nico

PS Here is my old school 2005 final film from ECU ML. It has a few holes in it but overall it still makes me smile. You can view it here:  A Cat Named Maceo

Keep an eye on this space for more updates and progress/process stuff over the year! Ciao for now.

Perth…Is the Mother of Invention

Thursday September 23rd, 2010

So kicking around some ideas, testing out some query theories….using a whole bunch of images I have sitting in my archives and needing a way to grasp this city I’ve made a lil’ Tumblr blog (which is super easy to do for all you kids at home) called Perth…Is the Mother of Invention  and it can be found here:  http://perthstreetlife.tumblr.com/

With some good feedback and some rad ideas muchos is possible. This is just something I’m doing for fun. But at the same time I hope it gives the young’uns something to think about, or a new perspective on a developing city. Just tryna help change the attitude which comes from knowing or even giving this city some reference to itself. It’s miniscule modern history. So while there are more photos of street art on there at this point in time keep an eye out for new stuffs: next on the list are some kickass night exposures and some articles giving context on facadism in Perth.

Cheerios!

Home Is Where My Heart Is

Wednesday August 4th, 2010

Home is Where My Heart Is is a photographic exhibition capturing the reality of youth homelessness.

Opening Night: Thursday 5th August 2010 @ 6pm
Exhibition continues through to Sunday 15th August, open 11-5 everyday.

Where? 834 Hay Street, Perth (opposite His Majesty’s Theatre)

Now in its third year, the exhibition is the culmination of a project that partners young emerging photographers with young homeless people, who are asked to take a photo that captures their interpretation of home.

“Many people in the community believe that young people are homeless because they choose to be, however the reality is that many young people are escaping abusive and unsafe environments. The exhibition is an opportunity for the wider community to understand the realities of youth homelessness through the eyes of those experiencing it,” Lisa Laschon, YACWA’s Executive Officer said.

It is the simple act of sharing knowledge and skills that makes this exhibition so powerful. Each large-scale print will be taken by the young homeless person; the emerging photographer is simply involved in enabling the young person to understand light, aperture and composition and how these creative elements affect the way we read an image.

Profit from the sale of prints goes directly back to the services that support these young homeless people. In 2009 we raised over $7000 for these services.

This event is run by the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia in partnership with Propel Youth Arts WA.

Home Is Where The Heart Is 2010

Thursday July 8th, 2010

Huzzah! Today I’m out and about with some underprivileged kids from Step One to mentor them on how to take photos. The kids take us to where they stay, where they feel most at “Home”- whether it’s couch surfing at a friends place, living at a refuge, squatting or on the streets. The photos then go on display for an exhibition in August during National Youth Homelessness Week. The prints raise money for the institutions which help take care of these kids and the exhibition helps give them the confidence they need in themselves.
Working for the 3rd year running I am super excited to be a part of this project again. Stay tuned for the exhibition dates and details!
