I was lucky enough to win a WAM Song of the Year award last Thursday. It was quite nice. Allow me to regale you with the full tale.
After spending the day mixing a few of DJ Silence’s tunes for Community Words (which is shaping up very nicely, I should say) I caught a lift down to the Fly By Night Club in Freo with Empty, Wisdom2th and, of course, Silence. As is necessary in such situations, freestyling ensued. A merry good time was had by all (except Silence who was clearly bullied by Empty who pretended to abandon him at a service station on the way). We also encountered the toughest to open beer bottles of all time courtesy of Wisdom2th. Freestyling continued in the carpark opposite the venue, much to the mild disapproval of the “industry types” that were parking near us. To be fair, I think one of Silence’s lines referred to “hanging a piss out the window” and they were probably concerned about their cars.
Anyway, about 5 minutes after we enter the venue they announced that YLEM had won the Electronic/Dance Song of the Year category. Massive congratulations to YLEM! Immediately after his award, it was announced that my tune ‘The Ego-dystonic Blues’ had won the Hip Hop category. Okay… it was the Urban/Hip Hop category – but really, what is urban music? I am leaving that word off. I accepted the award, I got a photo then I partook of a few beverages with the crew. Questionable photographs were taken after the beverages (not quality-wise, Dan Craig is awesome). I blame Wisdom2th for the content of those photos.
After this we made tracks back to Perth. The freestyles in the car on the way home were probably not as good as on the way there, but they sure seemed a lot more awesome. Beer makes all freestyling awesome.
All in all, a good night!
