Mathas

Bio

Rapper/Producer/Designer

The alias ‘Mathas’ is taken from his name, Tom Mathieson. All ‘emcees’ need a pseudonym and this was the best he could come up with. Or so he’ll tell you. However, behind his bedraggled appearance and self-deprecating humour lies Australian hip-hop’s preeminent lyricist.

Mathas is a social commentator whose lyrics create alternative landscapes on the back of a sharp wit. His characters mirror our flaws and his stories ring truer than our daily headlines. Touching on elements of life from a safe Australian birth to the climatic environment we now exist in, Mathas picks apart his planet with thickly cryptic sarcasm that is overall begrudgingly optimistic.

*”Skyhawks” from the album 10 Pound Hairless Sasquatch won the Urban category of the WAM Song of the Year Competition 2010.
*Best Urban/Hiphop Act nomination at the Western Australian Music Awards (WAMI) 2010

Evenin people,

Thought I’d give a bit of a quick rundown of what ive been up to.

  1. Im on nicotine patches, inhaler and gum.  I need a full arsenal to kill it. I think I decided 12 years was enough and 30-40 a day was a bit absurd.  The only thing is that the inhaler makes my glands swell and I look like I have a tampon hanging from my mouth..
  2. Im in the process of working on a film clip for ‘Honey Stuck Fingers’ off the 10 Pound Hairless Sasquatch album with a couple crew from Cut&Paste, should be done over the coming months.
  3. Sibalance and I are finally working on some new Math&Balance stuff, been doing a few shonky recordings of ideas at my house and some of them are turning out beautifully. Hopefully we can get a release done for early next year.  Right this second im finding it hard to rap though, cos my lungs are repairing and coughing up mustardy lung chunks.
  4. Supporting a few tours over Aug-Sep-Oct including Sage Francis. Will give more details soon.. all still being confirmed.
  5. On October 25 I’m going to Europe for 2.5 months on holiday.. Never been to Europe, never seen snow, never had a white Christmas.. cannot wait.
  6. Oh yeh.. im also working on trying to make my solo live show completely wireless.. yeeaa.

Now watch this:

Its from the Sasquatch Music Festival in the US. I didnt know i had a festival named after me..

This guy kills it.

10 Pound Hairless Sasquatch

Friday June 11th, 2010

10 Pound Hairless Sasquatch is a project a long time in the making. The debut release by Perth lyricist/producer Mathas is a collection of songs written over the past 8 years that have finally been compiled into something uniquely refined. The product is an album replete with displays of verbal agility and diverse beat production.

The world painted in 10 Pound Hairless Sasquatch is one far more skewed than our own.

While Mathas handles the main body of production on the album, guest local producers Hykus, The Empty Cup & DOS4GW make strong appearances, as well as cuts by DJs Deph One & Arms in Motion and verses by fellow Perth rap buddy Able.

This is an album written, produced, recorded and mastered in Perth from the ground up.

10 Pound Hairless Sasquatch was released Thursday 17th September 2009 through The Community Records & affiliate label Paper Chain.
