Jenn Garland is inspired by urban decay, geometry and old stories. The fine line between light and dark influences her work as she is drawn to those uncomfortable spaces in between:
“I like the beauty in the disturbing…and the idea of one thing encompassing both ends of the scale, both aspects of the binary. I think that grey area is quite important. Things like life and death, black-white, good-evil only gain their meaning by their relationship to the other…without them each would cease to exist” (2008 – MD Limited Edition 2)
She has been illustrating and painting for a few years but is now focusing on sculpture and working toward an exhibition of her larger-scale 3D work.
Jenn Garland is also the creator of Alice Anon , which is a range of locally manufactured Tshirts.

Just got back from Europe and managed to check out the Venice Biennale for the first time, which is a massive International arts festival held every 2 years since 1895. It’s an amazing showcase of some of the best contemporary art the world has to offer, which you often don’t get a chance to see in little ol’ Perth.
With so many great artworks its hard to pick favourites, but I thought I’d share some photos here of standout pieces.

Ok, so it took me a few months (quite a few), but here is a pic of a mural I finished at Mojo’s a while back:

I’ve been working on a series of menacing urban landscapes which are about implied violence. Instead of painting on flat surfaces I’ve started creating a range of sculptural panels. Here’s an in progress shot of one of the pieces

I’ve been working on some short films to integrate into an interactive sculptural installation, which plays around with two and three dimensional space. Here’ a link to some phot0 experiments from my research.

After finishing this commissioned chest, my love of triangles has been rekindled and I’ve discovered the beauty of hinges! There is something strangely satisfying about opening and closing doors and compartments. I will probably play around with hinged panels, lights and sounds for my next sculptural project, to create an interactive experience.
I made the wallpaper on this chest was from an illustration of native Australian flowers, mostly from the West, which I researched on the net. There’s around 25 different species, some of which you might recognise.
