Uncomfortable Beats keeps rolling strong into 2012 with a one off mega-Thursday line-up featuring the legendary Dizz1 and interstate live guests such as Diger Rokwell (W.A) and Mannheim Rocket (N.S.W). On top of that we have local residents Able8 & ShiKung.

DIZZ1
Melbourne based turntablist and producer Dizz1 has been involved in the music industry for over 10 years, both here and abroad, including 2 years in Japan. He has collaborated in the studio with Om’Mas Keith (Sa-Ra Creative Partners), Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313) and Steve Spacek (Africa Hitech),
Stereotyp (Crunchtime Records) and the one they call Roots Manuva as well as forming a new live project with DJ Dexter called ‘Curse The Machines’.

DIGER ROKWELL
The 2 times WAMI nominated, Diger Rokwell is the chameleon of Perth creative scene. As co-founder of influential crew The Community, Diger has aided the growth of independent electronic music in Perth. His five self-released albums Digstrumentals, The Earthhead, Digerbodia, We Are All Related and Sri Diger are an intercultural mix of global sounds, field recordings, spoken word, heavy drums, driving bass and spaced out sonics with context and narrative.

MANNHEIM ROCKET
Mannheim Rocket has been bridging the worlds of classical music and modern bass for some time now. The ‘De Profundis’ EP released in 2011 on 3BS gave a dark ambient take on the latter days of the great Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich. Since then Mannheim has been sculpting a varied live set by means of reconstructing tracks from source material – combining them with improvised beats and dub influenced effects.

ABLE8
Over the years Able has gone from strength to strength with his music career, whether fronting live bands as an MC, or pushing electronic gadgets as a producer, or even behind the scenes promoting underground music genres and parties…His unique brand of Alternative Hip-Hop and Electronic Bass Music pushes boundaries and grows as does his forever expanding roster of world-wide collaborators.

SHIKUNG
Uncomfortable Beats resident DJ ShiKung has built a tasty list of supports over his 7 year stint in Melbourne’s club and bar scene. On top of this he runs “Glitch This!!” Club nights and radio show, which is approaching its 100th live-to-air broadcast this coming Sunday! Fresh from playing Deliverance Festival he is back in Melbourne and pushing the best sounds in Glitch-Hop and all genres of Bass-Music.

Think Twice & Niche Productions Presents

The Stepkids (Stones Throw)

25th January (Aus Day Eve) – The Bakery – Perth

Niche & Think Twice Productions presents your next favourite band The Stepkids’. The latest discovery by Stones Throw Records’ (home to Madlib, Aloe Blacc, J Dilla, Mayer Hawthorne and more), The Stepkids have an uncanny ability to distil the best parts of your record collection and make it in to something completely new, and they do it all with live instruments and stunning visuals.

Their debut self titled album is steadily winning fans across the country, whilst their live show has been described as one of the clear hits of the recent CMJ music conference, making this Connecticut trio the buzz band of the Summer season.

“The Psychedelia running through its 70s west coast songwriting melts violins, guitars, mahogany drums and vintage keyboards in to one golden late-afternoon trip.”’ –
Sydney Morning Herald, 4 stars

There’s no singular icon, no singular sound, and no singular way of making it happen for the Stepkids. It’s psychedelia for the 21st century, where the focus is on the whole. The groove is a fusion of punk and jazz, West African and 1960s folk, neo and classic soul, classic funk and 20th century classical. The band produce, engineer and record themselves on a reel-to-reel.

With special guests Diger Rokwell, Andrew Sinclair, Clunk, Declan, Zowaski and Jo Lettenmaier

Friday, February 17
The Bakery – 233 James Street, Northbridge

This is functional music that highlights the simple pleasure of artfully arranged sound, the kind of gorgeous and evocative record that fills up the room and shifts your perception for 37 minutes and then brings you gently back to the surface.
- Pitchfork

Pennsylvanian genius Balam Acab (aka Alec Koone) brings his much-hyped show to The Bakery on Friday, February 17.

Signee to buzz-label Tri Angle Records, Balam Acab’s debut album Wander/Wonder has received an amazing reception, winning rave reviews from the likes of Pitchfork and Resident Advisor. It’s an incredibly patient record; there’s an enormous sense of restraint that means that when the record hits, it’s “like an earthquake in fuzzy slippers”. Drawing comparisons to Burial, Balam Acab uses delicate, pitched up vocals and ethereal, echoed melodies combined with deep bass to create a completely enveloping listening experience.

Live, expect spellbinding experimental pop music that pushes boundaries both in terms of songcraft and production. Wander/Wonder is reworked in a live setting, with tracks disassembled and rearranged to create an entirely fresh sound.

Supports come from a cavalcade of local superstars – Diger Rokwell, Andrew Sinclair, Clunk, Declan, Zowaski and Jo Lettenmaier

Closing out an epic national tour, Perth’s electro cabaret touring machine Tomás Ford hits Fremantle to pimp his glorious new electro single I FEEL DIRTY. Check out the life-altering, hilarious, messed up video clip here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azKWjtYPo0w

I FEEL DIRTY is a pop-sized blast of sweaty, intense punk disco. It came out of Tomás’ early shows; he’d play a full-on set and then bundle his equipment into suitcases and run with them to make it to the last train home. The song revels in that feeling of being a sweaty mess, covered in fading makeup, bruises, a ridiculous costume and glitter.

You might have seen Tomás sometime over the last few years, creating magic in your favourite dive bar or festival, whether touring with the likes of Birds Of Tokyo or The Big Day Out’s Lilyworld. His last tour saw him stage-married to Malaysian pop princess ZE!. Now he has itchy feet again.

Joining him in Fremantle will be a live beats lineup of extreme party:
NAIK http://www.naik.com.au/
MULDER
DIGER ROKWELL http://digerrokwell.bandcamp.com/
OBSCOTCH http://obscotch.com/
YARHKOB (DJ SET) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrK_GZUR-Pk

And of course Tomás will be bringing his unpredictable combination of live beats, film projection, punk rock audience-baiting, costume changes and partystarting showmanship to every show for a run of dates that will scar their way into the minds of anyone who attends. In a fun way. Mental scarring is fun, yeah?

Following the release of his LP, “Bespoke”, Californian beat-maker Daedelus brings his latest creations to Perth this November with Australian wunderkinds Collarbones in support.

Los Angeles-based Alfred Darlington’s musical experimentation is accurately reflected by his artistic moniker. A homage to the mythological Greek inventor who helped his son Icarus experiment with flight, Daedelus has traversed his way through various musical pursuits, earning a reputation as an inventor himself (albeit tinkering with beats and sounds rather than feathers and wax).

With at least 10 albums and countless EP’s to his name, Daedelus’ latest release confirms his artistic integrity, praised as ‘an album of very high quality and one that should be celebrated for its invention’. (ContactMusic.com).

Released on premiere independent label Ninja Tune Records, the genre-defying sounds delivered on “Bespoke” reflect Daedelus’ fascination with the philosophies of dandyism – art for art’s sake. His image and his music are coloured by this philosophy, which is sure to translate into a captivating and dazzling live show that will be sure to fly audiences enticingly close to the sun.

Making their first appearance in Perth, Collarbones is the collaborative product of Sydneysider Marcus Whale and Adelaide resider Travis Cook, riding on the wave of their debut record “Iconography”.

Despite living in two different cities, the two work synergistically to combine sampled beats and synths resulting in a swelling mass of sound without taking themselves too seriously. Their live show is energetic and danceable, and sure to leave crowds buzzing.

Local support comes in the form of Diger Rokwell (The Community), Ben M ({move}) and Clunk (Don’t Sleep).

Tickets on sale from lifeisnoise.com, Now Baking, Heatseeker, 78 Records, Mills, Planet and the usuals for $22+bf.
