RTRFM, The Community and Boomtick Presents

DJ KRUSH

Many, many wonderful things hail from the land of the rising sun; and DJ Krush is an internationally acclaimed Japanese treasure.

Tokyo-born Krush (Hideaki Ishii) dropped out of school, joined a local gang, graduated to Yakuza and (thankfully) gave it all away to become one of the most skilled turntablists of our generation. Dubbed ‘the Godfather of trip hop’ by inthemix, Krush has a superb sense in mixing and composing his sound – recognised as the first DJ to use turntables as live instruments and sharpening his craft for two decades. From his Ronnie Jordan remixes to his wild collaborations with DJ Shadow, Krush is one of the most prolific identities in instrumental hip hop today.

Aside from his outernational activities as producer, remixer and DJ, he is adept at soundtracks for films, TV dramas & commercials.

Krush builds soundscapes (not dance tracks) populated with snippets of melodies, old-school beats, dub-like bass lines, Miles Davis-inspired horns phrases, turntable scratching and soulful diva crooning, and possess a strong jazz feeling. Krush established himself at the helm of Japan’s hip-hop with pieces of psychedelic, dub jazz-rock (Roll & Tumble, On The Dub-ble, Into The Water, Murder Of Soul) and made one hell of an impact with his sophomore album, Strictly Turntablised.

Krush is Japanese jazz hip hop, built for the chin-stroker in us and enjoyed by the truest underground.

Pure Shibuya, bitches. Hands together – bow and celebrate Krush’s 20th Anniversary with us. Limited edition autographed 20th Anniversary vinyl releases will be available for purchase.

Supported by: Arms In Motion, Diger Rokwell, Naik

Tickets: $30+BF on sale Monday 6 February 2012.

Available at www.moshtix.com.au , 1300 GET TIX (438 849), Moshtix outlets and the Boomtick iPhone App.

The Empty Cup is a producer and emcee. Having performed with The Typhoons, supporting acts such as Lyrics Born and The Streets, and at festivals such as Parklife and Good Vibrations, he is a veteran of the Perth scene. 2010 brought the emergence of The Empty Cup as a solo entity, and over the past year he has hosted the popular co-lab jam band night and other freestyle events and collaborated with established artists from all ends of the local music spectrum.

“The Mixtape” features production from international artists Kev Brown, Aeon, OneLove, Apollo Brown, Beat-Maker-Beat and Prince Paul. Drawing upon the rich pool of new wave hip hop artists in Perth, The Empty Cup has created an intricate tapestry of lyric and harmony. Other collaborating emcees, include Mathas, Pronto, Lewis Galaga, Marksman, Ol’Wright, ASAP, Stats and Slackjaw.

The Mixtape Launch will see The Empty Cup and his DJ Arms in Motion take to the stage with strings and a rhythm section. Other acts on the night include; The Stoops , Ol’Wright & Delirious, Rae (with Live Band) and Lewis Galaga. The release will be available for free download on the 17th of December 2011.

THE SUPPORT ACTS

A bunch of you will recognise Lewis Galaga as co-founder of The Typhoons behemoth. Here he places his first size 13 step into the perth hip hop scene as a solo entity. Excited? You bet I am. Lewis Galaga. Size 13.

Rae. You might have run into Rae under several different circumstances. Rae has a rep for old school battle skills, production work for the Stoops in their hit song “free”, and also his EP ‘fluke’, or even his other band Speekeasy… the list goes on… Oh and did i mention this guy has a live band? Rae. WITH LIVE BAND!!?! Love it.

Ol’Wright & Delirious bring the modern flow and feel of hip hop into Perth territory. With beat stylings that taste of Dilla, and vocals that roll like jet skis these guys have something uniquely fresh. I believe in these guys. And in Santa Claus. But mainly these guys. Ol’Wright & Delirious.

The Stoops. Well, where do I begin. So I wont. Don’t be an idiot – and see them play. Even coin is awesome. Oh yeah, and they won some award recently. Who cares? Like they need them. The Stoops.

Don’t forget The Empty Cup set will also feature ASAP, Stats, Pronto, Lewis Galaga, Marksman, Slackjaw and Ol’Wright!

Set Times:

8pm – 8.30pm: Lewis Galaga
8.45 – 9.15pm: RAE (w/ live band)
9.30 – 10pm: Ol’Wright & Delirious
10.15 – 10.45: The Stoops
11.00 – 11.30: The Empty Cup w Arms in Motion
11.30 – 12.10: The Empty Cup w Live Band

What’s good people? Just thought I’d share a few thoughts and goings-on.

First of all congratulations to my brother Adrian and his wonderful wife Natasha on their wedding in Italy. It was an amazing occasion, a beautiful setting and a magical evening. So good to see all of my EU family over there and enjoy the sights and culture of the Amalfi Coast. Not to mention, catching up with my main man Arran (Delta Triangle) in Berlin for my birthday, albeit having the flu. We caught Amon Tobin’s I:SAM show live – an amazing spectacle of sound design, visual engineering and stage design. Also saw Jehst launch his new album at Fabric in London. June was a great month for me.

Recently I’ve been helping fellow Stoops member Roc Walla compile a mix-tape for his design jawn Treehouse Collective (www.treehousecollective.com.au) – It will feature a broad range of talent from across Australia as well as many Community artists. I’ve been listening to the tracks a lot and they are all quality. It will be released as a download, album style… with a bonus mix by myself. Stay tuned for more about that! Here’s some artwork in the mean time.

As for my own work I have been piecing my equipment back together since I moved house at the start of the year, I had to buy a new soundcard to get my operations back under way. I picked up a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and it’s been great, despite it only utilizing a firewire connection, which unfortunately is becoming obsolete rather quickly. Looks like soon we’ll be rocking USB 3.0 interfaces, but knowing how fast audio tech moves the integration is still a long way off!

I plan on releasing a free EP some time before the end of the year, which will be mainly instrumental. Plans for another album are floating around in my head, the next offering will be heavily trip-hop influenced and I’m hoping to work with bands to lay down the instruments then remix them. That’s the plan anyway. My first album Ziggurat is available for download at armsinmoton.bandcamp.com (free for individual tracks or $5 if you want to donate and grab the whole album) and hard copies are available at Planet Video & Fat Shan records in Perth and Wax Museum in Melbourne. If you catch me out and about I’ll give you a CD for free!

See you guys this weekend for the Sri Diger & Dust Moats album launch at the Bird! HUGE!

Peace out for now! AIM.

Another serious gap between my Community blog updates. Well I updated my information in the bio section to better reflect things and I will be re-working my soundcloud soon at least!

Things have been busy with myself and the group I’m currently performing with The Stoops. We will have out own space up here on the Community site hopefully some time soon! If you want to check out The Stoops music hit up http://thestoops.bandcamp.com for some quality forward-thinking hip-hop music straight out of Perth. Man I hate plugging stuff! I have another small release planned of my own stuff but that is under wraps for now. Oh, I got my bandcamp site up and running if you want to check out http://armsinmotion.bandcamp.com you can get my album for $5 or if you want to do a sneaky and download each track on it’s own I have a “name your price” thing set up so you can just enter 0.

Also stay tuned for a new mix that I’ll be dropping for the Deadweight boys. That should be an interesting mash of stuff from all over the shop, boom!

Until next time!

ps. Check out GDP’s new album ‘Useless Eaters’ featuring the homies DOS4GW and The Empty Cup’s production – also some from Melbourne’s best underground beat terrorist AOI. http://runforcoverrecords.bandcamp.com/album/useless-eaters (man, bandcamp is killing it right now.)

Doors open 10pm

There has never been a group quite like this.

The world’s greatest beatboxer, the world’s greatest Freestyle MC, and one of the

best turntablist/producers still carrying the torch for The Rock Steady Crew and real

hip hop music. This trio has been friends for a long time, and always wanted to

perform together. A few years ago, The Magnificents formed and history was

made. They set out and did a test run of less than 10 shows in the US and Europe.

Of course, the response was incredible. And so now the time has finally come… The

Magnificents are set to start their world tour, slamming in to Villa on Friday 8 April.

This is something very special, very different, and quite possibly a one-time only run.

This may never be done again.

With Rahzel, a human instrument, known for being able to do beats on demand,

and Supernatural, the Guinness Book of Records World Champion freestyler, most

of the entire show is improvised. That’s right! No two shows are ever exactly the

same. Topped off with the Rock Steady Crew skills of DJ JS-1, you can be

guaranteed; every show is special.

Local support from The Community’s own Arms in Motion, Angry Buda and PDS.
